If you are in need of work and you are turning to temping in New York, you have to just start registering with temp agencies until you find some that give you work.

There is no real way to know which agencies will give you work and which ones won't. I once registered with this agency at about 1:00 pm and I was convinced that I would never hear from them. The agency called me at 4:00 pm that day asking me if I could work THAT night.

If the agency forces you to go through very elaborate registration rituals, they either don't have any work or they don't like you, for one reason or another. Sometimes it is advisable to keep calling into an agency asking if there is work available, but in general, if they are not calling YOU, you need to keep registering with more agencies until you find ones that do call you. Knowledge of Microsoft Office is a required basic skill, but if an agency really needs people they will train you in whatever it takes to send you out on jobs.

Agency Reviews

In general, reviews, comments, and/or feedback on agencies should be taken with a grain of salt. Every temp agency has its idea about what they are looking for.

AND ON THE SUBJECT OF RATES, it is just a waste of time to list rates for agencies, because every agency will decide how much it wants to pay you on an individual basis. If you assume that every temp in the city has a different rate, you would not be very far off.

What temps really need to know about temp agencies is (1) which ones have work; (2) which ones have a habit of missing payroll; (3) what is the registration process for agencies; and maybe (4) what kind of clients the agency has if you are looking to work in a specific industry or for a specific company.

Targeting

You can waste a lot of time going to temp agency after temp agency HOPING that one of them will have work, OR you can register with temp agencies that YOU KNOW have work.

This is the power of TARGETING companies that you know are making money and have work (and companies that you ultimately may want to work for as a "permanent" employee).

Find out what companies in the industry/field you want to work for are making money, ask those companies what temp agencies they are using and register with those temp agencies.

Does anyone having any targeting success stories?

Limo Home At Night

Almost every company will give you a limo home if you work at night. It has more to do with liability protection on their part than with any desire to be helpful. Some companies or individual client employees may buy you dinner at night also, this is usually up to the particular employee to decide.

There are a few companies that don't give cars, these companies usually end up having trouble getting people to work at night and if they don't give cars home they probably don't pay any money, so they probably are a waste of time to begin with.

The DOWNSIDE of a car home every night is that a company or agency may ask you where you live before they give you the assignment. If you say you live in New Jersey or Long Island they may not give you the assignment because they don't want to pay for a car to go that far at night particularly if the assignment is long-term (they will probably night tell you this is the reason for not giving you the work).

Cashing Your Check

If you are new to New York City, you should be warned that it is almost impossible to cash a check in New York. Even if you take a check to the branch of the bank that the person who wrote it has an account at, that branch may still tell you that YOU need to have an account with that bank before they will cash ANY check for you.

Fortunately, things are different with payroll checks. Many temp agencies have agreements with check cashing places that allow you to cash your check without paying the usual fee. Other agencies have agreements with banks to cash their checks. Still other agencies have direct deposit available.

Personally, I hate New York Banks and void doing any business with them. A general rule is that the bigger and more famous a bank is, the more likley it is to be useless, and the more likely it will be that its fees will be higher than any other bank in town.

If you create an LLC or other business and try to get a business account, some banks may tell you that you have to hire a lawyer or accountant to open the account for you.

New York DOL, Unemployment uses Fleet Bank as their bank, so you can cash your unemployment check at any Fleet Bank for free.
